Apple Ipad Buying Guide

April 16th, 2010

Actually first time when i saw Apple finally launched its iPad tablet computer last week, my first impression was “whoa, this thing is magical”, with price tag around $499, i guess it was a little bit unbelievable. but not until i googled and researched at official Apple site and few others, it was a little bit more complex. The Ipad packed with ambition, hard to mention in a couple of words until it’s actually available for sale, which is not in this near future. but i can conclude from Apple’s launch and after some research.

The keyboard better than I expected, just like a jumbo version of iPhone keyboard. more like a fusion from iPod and iPhone. the room between them are spacious that you’ll be tapping the right character much easier. it’s a simple keyboard enough for modest writing task such as emails, quick jots of text and so on. Will also work with Bluetooth keyboards. The price tag seems a lot more reasonable, consider it was like going to be sold at $1,000 or so, but for $499 you’ll get solid 16GB storage without 3G broadband and peaks out at $829 for one with At&T 3G and 64GB of storage. And you got all iPhone application run on it which means it’ll work with more than 150,000 programs from the day it shipped. But the bad news are you have to deal with most of the program are designed for the iPhone sized-screen. it’ll take a while before developers build applications exclusively for iPads.

As for me , the things that make iPad less cool are it doesn’t have a camera, and run solely on Apple’s program, without support for Adobe Flash technology ( it means less flv’s or youtube videos, flash content and some online games won’t work). and all run only in full screen mode. Although Apple softwares that packed with iPad are marvelous, such as photo viewer, iWork, word processor and presentation program, you can’t print from the device. and the best thing is to create PDF files and move them to PC and print there. A little bit odd?

If you’re planning to buy it to make it your primary computer, it’s an absolutely not! not even a comparation to netbooks, a lot of people still get more comfort with traditional looks of PC.It’s not prepared to substitute your main PC. For that, it has to be something that can run a wider variety of software, and work with printers and other devices. don’t forget its capacity that only a few GBs compared to even the smallest netbook. and if it’s not enough, take a look at the 9.7-inch display and you’ll start wondering why Apple build jumbo-sized iPhone? But for you who might have bought a netbook in the past as a secondary computer will buy an iPad instead, and be pleased with the purchase, especially if they’re primarily interested in consuming music, movies, e-books, and Web pages.

In conclusion if you’re intended to buy an iPad, at least wait until march to make your decision, when the first units ship. And if the history of the iPhone repeated, It’ll be a second-generation iPad in 2011 that fixes most of its biggest flaws and packs more features with more competitive price of course.

iPad to hit stores April 3

March 9th, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Apple Inc said the first iPads will be in U.S. stores on April 3 and hit nine international markets later in the month, easing concerns that manufacturing constraints could delay launch.

The news sent shares of Apple surging as much as 4.3 percent to an all-time high of $219.70 on the Nasdaq, as analysts said the speedy international rollout could help build sales momentum.

The 9.7-inch touchscreen iPad, which is designed to surf the Web, play video and games, and read digital books, is the most anticipated product launch from Apple since the iPhone in 2007.

Chief Executive Steve Jobs unveiled the tablet in late January, but the company did not announce any international markets until Friday, when it said the tablet will go on sale in Australia, Canada, France,GermanyItaly, Japan, SpainSwitzerland and the UK in late April.

“I think it eases concerns that were circulating about supply. There’s always so much speculation around a launch, and this alleviates those fears,” said Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross, adding that the breadth of the international launch should reassure investors.

Cross expects the iPad to be a major growth driver for Apple eventually. She estimates the company will sell 4 million to 5 million units in the first year, which will add $1 to earnings per share.

The April 3 launch date means Apple won’t likely book any iPad revenue in the current fiscal second quarter, which closes at the end of March. Nonetheless, Barclay’s analyst Ben Reitzes said the launch plans added some “welcome clarity.”

“Not only is the device available April 3 in the U.S., but we believe availability in nine other countries by the end of April is likely quicker than many thought, lending potential upside to consensus estimates into mid year,” he wrote in a research note.

Analysts are currently forecasting Apple’s fiscal 2010 earnings per share at $11.62, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, up from $9.08 last year.

There has been some debate on how successful the much-hyped iPad really will be. While most agree that the device is well-designed and appealing to consumers, some analysts are not convinced there is a big market for tablet computers.

The iPad will have to compete for consumer attention with a myriad of established devices, including smartphones, netbooks and dedicated e-readers like Amazon.com Inc’s Kindle.

Apple said that an iBooks application for the iPad — which will compete with the Kindle — would be available as a free download on April 3.

A BIT LATER THAN EXPECTED

The U.S. launch date for the iPad model with short-range Wi-Fi wireless links, starting at a price tag of $499, is slightly later than the previously expected late March launch.

Oppenheimer & Co analyst Yair Reiner said there were some supply constraints around the iPad, which was not unusual for a major product launch. But he said that would not be an issue in the long run.

“I think supply constraints can have some short-term impact in the first quarter, obfuscating the true demand around launch time, but the longer term is more important,” he said.

Customers looking for versions of the iPad with third-generation (3G) high-speed cellular data links will have to wait until late April, said Apple.

AT&T Inc, the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, will provide wireless connections for the iPad. But AT&T’s top executive said earlier this week that he expects consumers to mostly use Wi-Fi to connect the iPad.

Beginning March 12, U.S. consumers will be able to go to Apple’s website to preorder both the Wi-Fi-only model and the version with 3G and Wi-Fi, or reserve a device to pick up at a store on April 3.

Research firm iSuppli estimated the total materials costs for each device is $219.35, with a $10 manufacturing cost.

Apple’s iPad Not to Get iPhone Tethering, Says So Apple’s Steve Jobs [iPad Tethering to iPhone Officially Not Supported; Unofficially Who Knows What Will Happen?]

March 8th, 2010

Yesterday we found out that the Wi-Fi iPad will be available in U.S. stores starting with April 3 while iPad pre-orders will kick off on March 12. It’s no wonder that excited iPad customers are getting their cash ready to get one of the three Wi-Fi iPad models available so far.

One of those customers based in Sweden fired off an email straight to Steve Jobs asking him whether the Wi-Fi iPad will be able to use the iPhone’s 3G connection. Surprisingly Steve Jobs answered from his iPhone and his answer was short and to the point: “no.”

It’s only logical for Apple not to want to support iPhone tethering on the Wi-Fi iPad. If you want 3G you should pay an extra premium 3G fee of $130 for the 3G iPad which is coming only at some point later in April.

Unofficially some clever folks might find a way to enable iPhone to iPad tethering in the near future although such a tethering feature isn’t really supposed to work.

The main point here is that the main man from Apple is using an iPhone decided to personally respond to this inquiry which means this is a serious matter. We can only assume he must have gotten before this question and maybe he’s just a little tired of having to answer it.

While we do understand Apple’s personal attachment to hard cold cash they should also understand our same needs. Paying an extra $130 for the 3G antenna it’s just a little too much. Here are, once again, the official iPad prices which you will find in Apple stores later this year:

Wi-Fi iPad:

  • 16GB – $499
  • 32GB – $599
  • 64GB – $699

3G iPad:

  • 16GB – $629
  • 32GB – $729
  • 64GB – $829

An earlier report this year suggested that Apple could decide to cut down prices should the iPad not sell very well. But something tells me that the whole talk about iPad availability this week might have convinced a lot more people to pre-order the device, just to make sure they are among the first ones to get it.

Oh and just as a side note, given all the iPhone OS 3.1.3 issues you guys have been telling us about, it looks like Steve Jobs is still using on iPhone OS 3.1.2. Wonder why?
