$35 Indian Tablet Coming Soon…

July 25th, 2010

So, finally a computer device, which can help us to browse the net, to have a video conferencing, to save or to write any text and to do all the other things which are supposed to be the basic necessities from a computer, will be available at $35.

This astonishing news was disposed by HRD minister Sh. Kapil Sibal. It was really a great effort by the government researchers and obviously, it would not have been possible with the young minds from IITs and IISc. Students form B.Tech and M.Tech batch also played a vital role in developing the motherboard and the other key components and no doubt they all did this under the inspiration and guidance of their mentors, professors and experts.

This is really a great achievement for our country, keeping in mind about the $100 laptop developed by MIT students, which were used non-profit One Children One Laptop Program. Now, we can really estimate about the excess price marked for iPads by Apple. It was also mentioned during this release that the research will still go on to reduce these prices till $20 or $10. This will be really beneficial for the poor students, for whom having a computer was not possible.

During the release HRD minister showed the prototype of that product and it was even smaller than a iPad, So atleast it has a single advantage over iPad (excluding the price). It was also mentioned that this device will run on a variant of Linux, it will not have any internal storage but you can store any data on external memory card, it also has a feature of video conferencing, it has an in-built word processor which will support the formats like TXT, DOC and DOCX and a web browser. Apart from these it will also have a multimedia viewer which can read the formats like BMP, GIF, AC3, AVI, BMP and many more.

But still some of the info was not disclosed like, we don’t know about the processor which will be used and we also don’t know what Ram will it have. Till now only the prototype has been released, it has not gone under manufacturing yet as they are still searching the mass producer of this device. I am sure that once it gets into market, people who do not use their laptop form heavy games and applications, will go for these products and it may also happen that the users may buy it and keep it along with their other laptops, because of its size and weight.

We will keep you updated with more news about this [ Approx INR 1700 ]$35 Indian Tablet, stay tuned to catch more updates on this.

Video Converter For iPod/iTunes/Apple TV/YouTube On Mac OS X – Evom

June 17th, 2010

One thing that has always bugged me with the video conversion software available in the market is the overwhelming number of formats and their corresponding compression and quality settings. When I need to convert a video, its usually because it doesn’t work in that format on my favorite device or service, and thus the need to convert. For the newbie, all these options and terms related to compression and resolution and frame rate may be a bit too much.

In general, what a person wants from the converter, while converting a video is -

  1. The converter should know what format to output in, based on the type of device I select I want to run the video on.
  2. The converter should have a minimum loss in quality (while conversion), and the compression artifacts should not significantly affect the overall quality of the video
  3. The size of the output video should preferably be smaller than the input video, but in no case should it be larger than the input video. The compression algorithm/codec used should be efficient.
  4. If I am an advanced user, the converter should allow me to manually set some basic parameters and quality/codec settings for the conversion.

We want the converter to do this on its own, and without bugging us for details. Evom is a freeware video conversion app for Mac OS X that satisfies the above conditions.

Evom has 4 modes targeted towards different Apple devices and services, also YouTube. Each conversion procedure has some predefined settings, which cannot be changed. This is a good thing, contrary to what you may feel, because the output videos from each of those modes is customized to look best on the target system.

Lets take an example of the iPod video conversion. To convert a video for your iPod Nano, Classic, Touch or an iPhone, all you need to do is drag the video to the Evom window. You’ll see a dialog like this -

All you need to do is click on ‘Convert’. Evom does the conversion and imports the video to your iTunes library. From there, you can easily sync your video to your iPod. Now if you view this video on your Mac, it might seem blurry and pixelated, but since the quality is customized for your iPod, which has a much smaller screen, it looks great on your iPod (this is of course subjective, and also depends on the quality of the source video; the better the source, the better the conversion would be).

Evom saves the converted video files to the ‘Movies’ folder in your home directory, and sadly I couldn’t find a way to change this. This is a feature that I would like to see in future versions.

If you want to convert a video with custom settings, you can just choose the ‘Folder’ option in the video modes (as seen in the above screenshot).

For quality, there are 3 custom settings – High, Medium and Low. You can select from the following output formats – AVI, FLV, HTML5, OGG, OGV, MOV, MP3, MP4, MPG, WMV. Since this option outputs to a specific folder, you can change the output location of the converted video.

You can also customize how many threads of CPU you want to allot to a video conversion, to get the maximum performance out of your CPU. You may also choose to convert more than 1 video simultaneously. There are 2 choices as far as codec is concerned – H.264 and Xvid.

How Can I Add YouTube Videos In PowerPoint

March 31st, 2010

How to Add YouTube videos to your PowerPoint Presentation

This article shows how you can easily add a YouTube video to your presentation – and how you can carry this off without any problems at all. All you have to do is simply follow the steps given below.

Method A

The obvious way is to download the video from the web using any of the online (or on PC) softwares available. Then convert the FLV video into AVI, WMA, or MPEG using a video converter (again, there are loads of them out there), and then embed the object in the presentation. However, in this process you might lose out on the video quality. But this is the safest bet.

Method B

If you are going to present at a place where you have access to an internet connection, you can afford to directly embed the YouTube video in your presentation. For this, you have to do the following:

  1. Click on the Office logo to the top-left and then click on PowerPoint Options.
  2. Go to the Popular tab.
  3. Select the check-box next to Show Developer tab in the Ribbon and click on OK.
  4. Navigate to Developer -> More Controls.
  5. In the list of objects in the new window, select Shockwave Flash Object and click OK.
  6. Create a box in the slide where you will put the video.
  7. Right-click on this box and select Properties.
  8. Select Shockwave Flash Object from the drop-down menu.
  9. Next to the Custom option, click on the small square that has three dots on it.
  10. This will open a Properties dialog for the Shockwave Flash Object. Paste the URL for the YouTube video (you can find it under URL to the right of the video page on YouTube) into the Movie URL section.
  11. Replace the ‘=’ and ‘?’ signs in the URL with ‘/’ sign.
  12. Click on OK.

That’s it – you are done. Your YouTube video is successfully embedded in your slide show – to be downloaded and viewed in real time.

How Can I Play AVCHD With M2TS Files On My Computer

March 31st, 2010

Playing AVCHD formats like M2TS with Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra

Most of the high definition camcorders that are available in the market nowadays record the videos in the AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) format. This encoding requires that your video files are saved with the M2TS file extension. Although a typical camcorder (like the Sony or Panasonic HDR series) will come with bundled applications (such as Picture Motion Viewer) that enable you to view (and sometimes edit) these type of files, you might run into problems every now and then.

Most of the problems result from errors in the registry regarding file associations – thus, as a first line of defense you might want to check the registry file associations with an appropriate registry editing software. However, you can also go ahead and download a third party application that enables you to run the M2TS files.

A well-recommended suggestion in this regard is to download the Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra – a powerful video player that supports AVCHD formats, including files with the M2TS extension. Moreover, this player supports a wide range of other high definition video formats – almost anything from the standard AVI, DVD, MPG, DVD-mini, WMA, DivX Pro formats to the more recent Bluray formats that are in circulation.

This software package also comes with other cool features such as positioning of the subtitles bar below the video window for clarity, karaoke features, advanced audio output controls, and the like – all of which is integrated into a user friendly interface. The main window has a main video dock with two pullouts – one for audio controls and the other for auxiliary features.

Moreover, this application also increases your video editing abilities with the support of several codecs that are required for compatibility with packages such as VirtualDub.

You can purchase and download the latest version of the Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra software package from here.
