iPad does not have dedicated settings specifically to mute sound or volume, However with time you may see an app on apple store for non jailbroken ipad’s and some toggle app on cydia for jailbroken ipad’s

Till then the only way to turn off volume and mute it, then Press the Volume Down button until the sound is completely off – this is the only way right now – lets see what will happen in future.
